The match 4 of IPL 2019 saw Rajasthan Royals taking on Kings XI Punjab at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur. This game had a bit of everything. Big-hitting, quality bowling, acrobatic fielding and controversy, it was a game studded with everything.
IPL 2019 Match 4 RR vs KXIP Highlights
The trend of electing to bowl first after winning the toss continued for the fourth time in a row. Ajinkya Rahane was the man who took the decision this time. His call seemed to pay an immediate dividend as Dhawal Kulkarni accounted for KL Rahul’s wicket in the first over. Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal then took a subdued approach as KXIP reached 32/1 after the powerplay.
Gaylestorm struck Jaipur
Gayle was gradually getting into his groove but Agarwal was sent back by Krishnappa Gowtham for 22 in the 9th over. Things weren’t moving fast when Sarfaraz Khan took his time initially. But Gayle realized it was time to press on the accelerator. He went after Jaydev Unadkat in the 12th over by smashing 3 fours and a six. The opener also brought up his half-century from 33 balls.
All of a sudden, there was momentum in the innings. Sarfaraz too found his touch and went on the offensive. Gayle continued to play the big strokes and took Ben Stokes to the cleaners in the 16th over. The first four balls of the over went for 19 runs. He was looking to clear the fence again but Rahul Tripathi took a good catch on the boundary to send Gayle back for 79 from 47 balls.
The next 2 overs went for just 10 runs as the score read 155/3 after 18 overs. It was then time for Sarfaraz to take charge as the last 2 overs yielded 29 runs. Nicholas Pooran got out in the last over for 12 but Sarfaraz’s 46 from 29 propelled the visitors to 184/4 at the halfway stage.
The Royals were offensive from the outset. Rahane struck 3 fours in the first over to get things going. Jos Buttler joined in the act and the duo wreaked havoc. Buttler quickly overtook his captain and the score raced off to 64 without loss after 6 overs. After the powerplay, there was a slight halt in the scoring that led to the downfall of Rahane for 27 courtesy, Ashwin.
Controversy, followed by a collapse
But there was no stopping Buttler who kept going after getting to his fifty. Sanju Samson had the breathing space because his partner was doing the scoring. After 12 overs, the score read 105/1. The hosts were well within a chance due to the presence of Buttler. But Ashwin sparked controversy by mankading him for 69 in the 13th over.
Steve Smith, on his comeback, looked in decent touch. But his knock was cut short by KL Rahul who took a blinder off the bowling of Sam Curran. It triggered a massive collapse as Samson, Stokes, Rahul Tripathi got out under pressure. The tail-enders were left with too many to get and they fell short by 14 runs.
